Love for many is tender, heartfelt and sanguine, a feeling of compassion and warmth for another person. To make love is an extension of those feelings, and should be equally delicate and gentle. But what of that other side of love - passion? The feeling of intense, carnal, almost primal desire for someone. Freud identified that kind of unmitigated, unconscious desire in his discussions of the id, the raw hedonism in conflict with your sensibilities. And for some, to release some of these pressures from the id is the consummate expression of sexuality, its most wanton state. Enter SM, which for longtime lovers is a safe way to say 'I want you'. I want you bound to the bed where I can have you to myself. I want to know that I am in control for an hour or two of my most prized possession. To secure you in my passionate, jealous eye, if only for the here and now. And I want to be wanted by you. Not just to be wanted for companionship or love or other more abstract, universal reasons, but just that you see me here, naked before you, and you want that which you see more than anything around you. And you make sure, in the parameters of love and equality, that for the next little while we're together, I can't get away.
