Tubal Ligation

What is tubal ligation?

Tubal ligation is a process of sterilization restricting the ability of a woman to become pregnant through surgery. The procedure involves the cutting or blocking of the fallopian tubes so that the egg does not reach the uterus. Since it is a medical operation, tubal ligation can mean a hospital visit for one to four days. Although this procedure is sometimes reversible, any woman who wishes to proceed with a tubal ligation should consider this a permanent step.

How effective is a tubal ligation?

The tubal ligation procedure is virtually 100% effective.

What is the procedure for a tubal ligation?

A small incision is made in the abdomen and the fallopian tubes are either cut, tied or blocked. A hospital visit is required but normal sexual intercourse can normally resume within one week. A tubal ligation does not mean that the body will enter a menopausal state. The egg is still produced every month but because the fallopian tubes are cut off from the uterus, the egg dissolves in the tube. To arrange a tubal ligation, call your doctor for a recommended physician in the field.

What are the effects of a tubal ligation?

Tubal ligation may cause a number of post operative complications. These include, but are not limited to: severe cramps, heavier periods, breakthrough bleeding and pelvic pain. In addition there may be some psychological effects of sterilization. Consult your physician for more information.
