Basal Body Temperature

What is the Basal body temperature method?

Like the rhythm method, the body temperature method attempts to pin point the time of the month when ovulation is taking place. This can be calculated because the body temperature rises after ovulation and stays higher until menstruation. The ovulation period can be calculated and you can count the days when you can engage in sexual intercourse safely. This method of birth control is very difficult and requires much time and effort. It is also completely ineffective against the prevention of STDs.

How effective is the Basal body temperature method?

The body temperature method can be effective if it is followed closely. It is typically only 85% effective. This method is considered more reliable than the rhythm method because there is a daily effort to chart the stages of the menstrual cycle.

There is an ongoing debate among Gynecologists as to the effectiveness of this method. Some women don't experience any significant rise in body temperature during ovulation while others may not experience any change at all.

How is the Basal body temperature method used?

This method should be learned from your doctor, family planning center or from an experienced couple.
